Elaine Marie Ellis, age 91 of Albertville, MN and formerly of San Diego, CA, passed away at Engel Haus of Albertville on Friday September 16, 2016.  Visitation will be Saturday September 24, 2016 from 930 am to 1030 am at Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel, 250 East Broadway, Monticello.  There will be a Memorial Service at 1030 am with Fr. Tony VanderLoop officiating.  Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery of Minneapolis.  Funeral arrangements are with the Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel of Monticello.

Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Burton;  four children Kenneth, Dennis, Richard and Anita;  and two sisters Bernice and Muriel.  She is survived by her children Carol August of El Cahon, CA, Kathy Ellis of Big Lake, MN, Burton Ellis of Valley Center, CA, and Judi Korous of Big Lake, MN;  many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Shirley Mae Anderson, 86, of Pelican Rapids, MN and Pearce, AZ died peacefully in her home on Lake Olaf surrounded by loved ones on September 9, 2016.

Shirley leaves behind 5 children: Cynthia Anderson (Peter Konsterlie), Denise (Art) Eggman, Keneth (Linda) Anderson, Elliott (Chris) Anderson and Stephanie (Tim) Cronin; 9 grandchildren: Ronald, Cassandra, Zoe, Rachel, Quinn, Jadyn, Heather, Tommy and Robin; great-grandchildren: Noah and Summer; brothers: Kenneth Swanson, Dennis (Vera) Swanson, Marvin (Sherry) Swanson, Orville (Anne) Swanson; sisters: Dianne Berg, and Barbara (Jack) Leeman; as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Duane Winslow Anderson; granddaughter, Noelle Marie Anderson; sister LaVerne Govednik; and brothers-in-law Martin Govednik and Ronald Berg.

Shirley was born in Rush City, Minnesota to Clarence and Helen Swanson on June 8, 1930. She grew up on a dairy farm in Big Lake, Minnesota where she was crowned “Miss Big Lake”. She attended St. Cloud State Teachers College and then taught elementary school in Anoka and Barnesville, Minnesota. Shirley was an adventurer, traveling to Europe with her friend Norma in 1953 on the Queen Mary, and returning on the Queen Elizabeth three months later. In 1956, she moved to Alaska with Norma and waitressed at the Highland Fling in Anchorage, before Alaska was even a state! Upon returning to the lower 48, she worked as a “stewardess” for Trans Texas Airlines, and eventually returned to her career in teaching. When Shirley finally settled down with the love of her life, Duane, she continued teaching in a pre-school setting where she was affectionately known as “Mrs. Shirley”, all the while raising five children in Golden Valley, Minnesota. Us children are very proud of the way we were raised—camping being integral part of keeping us all close to one another.

In 1990, after retiring, Shirley and Duane moved to their idyll home on Lake Olaf in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. There they developed a lifestyle that suited their desires: entertaining, gardening, canning, cooking, maple-syruping, quilting, walking, golfing and simply enjoying their entire family. Shirley took on volunteer work at the food shelf and Pass-it-On, and was a member of the Community Service Club. In 1995 they bought a second home in Pearce/Sunsites, Arizona after the Minnesota winters proved too tough. There they got into hiking and Texas Hold’em where Shirley shined like a pro.

Shirley will be dearly missed by all. As Duane put it years ago, “If somebody doesn’t like Shirley, something is wrong with them!”

A memorial service will be held at 11am on Monday, October 17th, 2016 at North Immanuel Lutheran Church where Shirley was a member. Luncheon to follow at the church. Everyone welcome to join the family as we continue celebrating her life at the home on Lake Olaf.

There is an additional gathering in Sunsites, Arizona at 11am on October 2nd with a tribute and potluck at VFW Post 9977, where we will be honoring her name with the “First Annual Shirley Mae Anderson Memorial Poker Tournament” beginning at 1pm. Half the proceeds will go to our local hospice.

Byrnell Boyd “Butch” Mahon, age 79 of Big Lake, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids. He was born on October 11, 1936, in Elsworth, MN to Joseph and Lenora (Schmidt) Mahon. When Butch was 10, his father was killed in an accident.  Later, his mother married Otto Hinderer and the family moved to a farm in Mountain Lake, MN. Butch graduated from Mountain Lake High School. In 1956 he married Janise Sombke and they had two daughters. He worked for Mork Construction from 1956-1987 and then went to work at Co-Op Power Company, now Great River Energy, in Elk River, MN until his retirement in 1998. Butch had many hobbies. He took flying lessons and bought a 1964 Piper Cherokee and loved to fly his plane. He also restored six Cushman Scooters.

Butch is preceded in death by his parents; stepfather; and two sisters Marlys & Joyce. He is survived by his wife Janise; daughters Robin Bergeron of Coon Rapids and Delilah (Jim) Kreuser of Ramsey; grandchildren Tommy (Sharri) Bergeron, Paul (Briana) Volkers, Dana (T.J.) Phillips; great granddaughters Annabelle, April, Maya, Elizabeth, Evelyn, Kaylee; sisters JoAnn Bloom, Glenda Friesen, Sandra Andler; and many nieces and nephews.

Cody Jay Haberman, age 24 of Big Lake, died tragically on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, in Big Lake. Cody had a big heart and was very creative, loving to tinker with many things. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Ernest Haberman. Douglas John Edward Maass, age 72, of Annandale, formerly of Big Lake and Watertown, died unexpectedly on Friday, September 30, 2016.

Douglas John Edward Maass was born May 19, 1944 in Watertown, Minnesota to Elmer and Emogean (Winkler) Maass. Doug grew up in Watertown, where he completed high school. As a young boy, Doug made many fond memories helping on his grandparents’ farm. After high school, Doug operated the Mobil Station in Watertown before he began his 30+ year career as a forklift operator for Sysco. In his spare time, Doug enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and listening to music, especially oldies and classic country. He had a knack for finding a good deal, whether at the store or at a garage sale. He was often found cheering at his grandchildrens sporting events or spending time with his dear friends. Above all, Doug treasured the time he was able to spend with his family, especially with his six adoring grandchildren.

Doug is survived by his daughters, Tara (Jeff) Kubian of Annandale and Tiffany (Ron Schulz) Maass of Mankato; and his six grandchildren, Tyler, Ashley, Brandon, Beckett, Kirsten and Michael. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Connie Batdorf.

Roger Allen Baldwin, 89 of Aitkinand formerly of Big Lake died Monday, October 3, 2016 at Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin.  He was born August 18, 1927 in Grant County, MN. to Howard Joseph and Gilma Tonetta (Bjore) Baldwin.  He Graduated from Hoffman High School in Hoffman, MN. class of 1945. He attended Chester Groth Music  Studio in Minneapolis and Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis on the G.I. Bill.  He was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in World War II.  Roger was united in marriage to Ronae Rosengren on September 9, 1949 at Saron Lutheran Church in Big Lake.  He worked many jobs including auto service work at Big Lake Motor Sales, a section hand for N.P. Rail Road, and an auto mechanic for R.H. Rosengren in Big Lake.  He owned and operated Roger’s Cafe in Big Lake and then became the Postmaster for Big Lake.  He was a member for 33 years of the Big Lake Volunteer Fire Dept. and retired as the assistant chief, the Big Lake American Legion Post #147 for over 60 years and served as past commander, Big Lake Commercial Club, Sherburne County Conservation Club, Sherburne County DFL, and First Lutheran Church in Aitkin.                                                                                                                         He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Richard.

            Elmer J. Stenberg, age 83 of Monticello, MN, peacefully passed away on October 24, 2016 in hospice at the Monticello Care Center after a long battle with cancer and its after effects. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents Elmer Sr. and Selma, and brothers Alden, Eugene, and Duane. He is survived by his wife, Marlys; children Sandra (Brent) Birdsall and John (Colene) Stenberg; two brothers, Virgil and Richard; eight grandchildren: Stephanie, Amy, Alexander (Alec), Isaac (Ike), Aleah, Michael, Daniel, and Jessica; and eight great-grandchildren: Lucille (Lucy), Everett, Arayla, Elizabeth (Betsy), Lael, Cecelia (Cece), Anders, and Greger.

            Elmer was a jokester from the moment he was born. He loved to claim that he was entitled to celebrate two birthdays. According to his mother, who was the primary witness at his home birth, he was born on November 24, 1932. His father, however, mistakenly submitted November 25 to the county clerk, therefore forever officially registering his birth date as November 25th. Having met his bride-to-be, Marlys Samuelson, at the roller rink, they were married on September 19, 1953. Elmer served in the US Army from 1954-55 and then farmed for several years near Ada, MN. For the next 33 years, Elmer was a millwright at the Boise Cascade paper mill in International Falls, MN. An avid outdoorsman who loved fishing on Rainy Lake and hunting at the cabin dubbed "the shack", he was also a skilled carpenter and enthusiastic gardener. Loving God and those around him, Elmer enjoyed teaching Sunday School children, volunteering at Wednesday night Boys' Club, and counseling at summer church camp. Elmer's life was characterized by family, friends, love, and laughter.

            A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 31st at 12:00 noon at Riverside Church in Big Lake, MN. Additional fellowship times will occur at later dates in Ada, where he will be interred, and International Falls. Memorials preferred to the Salvation Army.

Patricia Louise Farm left this world for her heavenly home surrounded by her loving family on November 2, 2016, in Big Lake, Minnesota after a lengthy illness. She was 77.

Pat Farm was born on December 15, 1938, in Fairmont, Minnesota, to her parents, Fred and Hannah Jensen. She graduated from East Chain High School in 1956. She married Ronald Farm in 1957. The Farms moved to Augsburg, Germany, where Ronald served in the Army. After returning from Germany, Ron and Pat made their home and raised their family in Fairmont, Minnesota, later moving to Eden Prairie and Big Lake, Minnesota. Pat spent much of her career investing in the lives of children as a reading teacher which she loved. Pat was active in the churches she attended, often playing the piano and serving on many church committees and boards.

The joys of Pat’s life were her children and grandchildren whom she adored and who absolutely loved her. She made holidays and every event special for her family and each individual. She loved traveling to Florida and spending time by the ocean, as well as attending the many activities of her children and grandchildren. She was often found on the athletic fields and theaters cheering on her grandchildren.

Pat is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 59 years, Ron; children Doug (Deb) of Zimmerman, MN, Tammy of Big Lake, MN, Dan (Claire) of Rochester, MN, Jon (Jane) of Rice Lake, WI, Jim (Marlo) of Arden Hills, MN; thirteen grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Hannah; sister Donna May; and brother Myron.

Visitation will be at Peterson-Grimsmo Funeral Chapel, 250 East Broadway, Monticello, MN, on Sunday, November 6 from 3:00-5:00 PM. All are welcome to attend the visitation. Mavis Elise (Schuette) Nass was born on September 25, 1937, in Glencoe, Minnesota.  She was the daughter of Edwin and Elsie (Dvorak) Schuette.  Mavis was baptized as an infant on October 23, 1937, and later was confirmed in her faith as a youth on April 15, 1951, both by Rev. Alf. Streufert at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe, Minnesota.  She received her education in Glencoe, Minnesota, graduating with the Glencoe High School Class of 1955. 

Mavis made her home in Glencoe, Big Lake and Moorhead, Minnesota.  Her life was blessed with six children, Brian, Scott, Todd, Shelly, Mary and Troy.  Mavis owned and operated Vivian’s Catering Service in Big Lake, Minnesota.

Mavis enjoyed playing bingo, cooking, bowling and reading.  She cherished the time spent with family and friends.          

Mavis passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, at Eventide Nursing Home in Moorhead, Minnesota, at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 14 days.

John Lawrence Sullivan, Sr., age 72 of Big Lake, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center of Minneapolis. A Celebration of Life Visitation was held on Sunday, December 11, 2016, from 2 pm to 3 pm at Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel, 250 East Broadway, Monticello. A Memorial Service followed at 3 pm with Fr. John was born June 14, 1944, in Rochester, MN, to James and Lorraine Sullivan, the youngest of seven children. John was drafted into the US Army in 1965 during the Vietnam War, and was honorably discharged in 1967 with the rank of Specialist 4th class. On September 21, 1968, John married Nancy Lawrence and they began their life journey together. John was employed at Graco and retired after a 20 plus year career. During his retirement, John was an avid fisherman and enjoyed traveling in his camper. John enjoyed spending time with his family and was very proud of having 39 years of sobriety. John was always there to help those in need, and sponsored many individuals on their path to sobriety.

John is survived by his two daughters and one son - Tina, Dorothy and John, Jr.; two grandchildren Andrea and Adam; two great grandchildren Dylan and Kurtis; sisters Jackie (Donnie), Janet (Jim), Joanne (Bill), Joyce (Rodney), Jeanne; sister-in-law Judy; many nieces, nephews, cousins; beloved dog Rufus, and cat Mango. John was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Sullivan; brother Jim; brother-in-law Lawrence; and beloved dog Bear Bear.

Michael A. Heinis, age 65 of Clear Lake passed away at his home after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, December 8, 2016. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at Rejoice Lutheran Church in Clearwater. Reverend Steven Timm will officiate. Interment will take place with military honors at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday December 13th and after 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday December 14th at Rejoice Lutheran Church in Clearwater. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Mike was born September 7, 1951 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota to Lloyd and Alice (Hagen) Heinis. He graduated from Henning High School in 1969. Mike attended the Wadena Technical Institute to train as a plumber. From 1974-1979 he proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Boiler Technician Second Class. 

On July 25, 1981 Mike married Deb Schonhardt (the love of his life) at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Mahnomen, Minnesota. In 2000 they expanded their family by 1 when they adopted their daughter Ashley. It was from Ashley that he learned how to be a "Dad". Ashley also taught Mike that not every trip needed to be "educational".  Mike's love of travel and history inspired him to return to college later in life where he graduated with a BA in History. 

He was employed as stationary engineer at the Minnesota Correctional Facility-St. Cloud, retiring in 2006.   After retirement Mike enjoyed driving for Tri-Cap and volunteering at the St. Cloud Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and for Sherburne County Veteran Service Office where he escorted patients to their appointments and drove veterans from outlying areas to the medical center. His greatest joy was to be of service to others especially veterans. He was a member of the Clear Lake American Legion Post #354 and Rejoice Lutheran Church.  He joined numerous mission trips to Children’s Haven International in Reynosa, Mexico. His favorite memories of these trips were playing with the children and the sense of community that was created across cultural lines. 

Survivors include his wife, Debra; daughter Ashley of Sauk Rapids; mother, Alice of Henning; brother, Ronald (Ann) of Ottertail; sisters, Patricia (Wayne) Olson of Moose Lake and Jackie (Curt) Erickson of Saginaw as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd; and sister, Lorelei Lewis.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.  

Private services were held for Richard A.  “Dick” Johnson, age 83 formerly of Clearwater who passed away peacefully on Monday, December 19, 2016 at the Wellstead of Rogers.  

Dick was born on August 13, 1933 in Minneapolis to the late Elmer and Elsie (Siljeholm) Johnson.  He married Margie Daniels on April 2, 1954 at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Monticello.  Dick proudly served in the US Navy during the Korean War.  He owned and operated RA Johnson and Son Plumbing in Minneapolis and later Big Lake.  He resided in Big Lake for many years prior to moving to Clearwater in 2012.

Dick enjoyed his work and mentored many. He also enjoyed his Sunday Family Steak Fry.   He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great great grandfather.

He is survived by his wife Margie; children, Shelley (Orville) Daluge, Terri Johnson, Patti Harney, Rick Johnson; son-in-law, Steve Fitch; 12  grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and sister, Jeanne Castle.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy Fitch; and brothers, Bob and Rollie Johnson.
